It'll give it plenty of punch alright Ken. It gave John 300bhp with a badly slipping clutch.

They are all sworn to secrecy today. Even Jules wont tell me how they got on. Perhaps they are still tinkering now by candle light.

It made 300 bhp and 340lbs with knackered head gasket.

Having a few teething problems, should get it sorted tomorrow morning.

Sorry martin i stand corrected. Daves gt28 had the slipping clutch and johns had the knackered HG. Mine was just cack.

It's alive. :D

Only done a few miles in it as it needs mapping. we've taken it upto 1 bar boost at half throttle and it feels quick!

Need to let to cool down and check everything again now.

Tidy mate 8) Any more plans for the engine John?
We could do with another trip to Powerstation in a few months

No current plans for the engine unless the clutch gives up and then I will put a lightened flywheel in. Apart from that I might get cams next summer to add a bit of sparkle but definitely no more after that

Ye, martin and I were talking about this as he fancies a trip up there before coombe in sept. Would be good if we could get a few of us together again and possibly get a small discount on it.

Glad all seems to be ok with it now. Just a bit of minor snagging to do eh?

Yep. I'll be up for another day up there in Powerstation-land.
You'll have some competition, John. (But that's another thread waiting to be started)

Ye, in the end thats all it was really, after an hour of tinkering it was good to go.
Looking forward to getting it re-mapped now and i was surprised how driveable the car remained on my existing map.

well it wouldn't be no fun if i had no competition now would it Nev
Be interesting to see how you get on because we both found it to be a right pain but this was mainly down to the size of the comp housing being so big and the 4" intake. I will be expecting to see lots of cable ties aswell

John,

Great work and in the true spirit of Saab tuning. It's a great turbo for that engine and, once mapped, you'll love it. 400 bhp min. I can only imagine the hell you've gone through trying to get that compressor to fit in that tiny space. You took the right actions with that grinder, though. Proud of you.

Alanb

Oh, and if memory serves me right, Nev got the small comp housing, which means it'll slip right in with masses of room to spare. Maybe even enough room for a pipe rack in the space

Thanks Alan,

I can't take the credit for the angle grinder though, it was my idea but it was down to Martin to do the actual cutting. Bit more experience with these things. I sure hope it makes at least 400bhp, that would be 8) . You will probably appreciate the temporary duck tape intake aswell (no pic up of this yet)

It was a bit of nightmare getting the housing in there and i think we under estimated how tight it really was.

I'm sure Nev did say at the last track day it was the smaller housing he had when i asked about it. True, it will just slip in there in comparison and definitely enough room for a pipe rack

So, went over to Bristol this evening to do some mapping on the road. Few issues with with the car not allowing the the turbo to spool as fast as it should or reach it's maximum boost. At the the moment the intercooler and the wastegate actuator are the first things to check.

Either - intercooler leaking boost somewhere
Or - actuator is not fully shutting and allowing boost out.

Car does achieve 1.6 bar boost (supposed to be 1.8 or 1.9) and later on this evening I was able to give it a good run and even without maximum boost the car does feel A LOT quicker.

Hopefully, find the cause of the boost problem soon as it will be an absolute animal when finished.

Can you hear the boost leaking out? I had a boost leak on the Subaru once, and you could *definitely* hear it.

With regards to the actuator, what happens if you run with the signal hose disconnected? Does it achieve target boost then (careful, because it might badly overshoot, but useful as a test if you're quick to let go of the go-pedal)

I had a similar problem on my original holset build, where the exhaust pressure would blow my EWG open slightly. It did achieve target boost, but it took longer to build up.

Can't hear the boost leaking and i figured if the intercooler was leaking it would more than likely blow a hose but can't rule it out.

Did try running without the W hose connected and the car acted exactly the same. It could be the EWG blowing open slightly as it does take a while to achieve 1.6 and may be it's preventing the requested boost level aswell. Hopefully, we will be able to change the actuator on the weekend or just cut more threads into the existing rod allowing it to travel further up.

The actuator bottomed out on the threads so I'm going cut some more into it saturday. I dont thinks it holding it closed tight enough.

The car spools late, and hits max boost (1.6 bar) at about 4200 RPM. It holds rock steady at that value to the red line.

PWM output is 98 all the way through the run (indicating that the software is doing all it can to hit the target boost = hardware issues).

Disconnecting the APC valve gives precisely the same outcome.

Adjusted the actuator and boost is up to 1.75.

Power the is really hitting at 4200rpm.

Want to try and get this down to 3.5k by adjusting the actuator more.

went out for a ride today.

Pulls really hard from 4200 rpm which after some research seems right. I say let it rev to 7k now

It's really quick, I think I left my spleen in the boot some where :park:
