hey plusone! its a common problem on these. i took mine apart 1 year after cleaning it, and it already had about 3mm coating!
its well worth while removing it and cleaning it properly, as the fuel economy is better as is the performance!!!! :)
Should only take about 1.5 hours really, just make sure the injector pipes go back on the right way!
peace, love and SAABS!

Thanks, I thought it's something wrong with my engine. So when you disconect your fuel pipe, did you use some special tools? Do you have to release preasure and drain the fuel first?

there shouldnt be all that much pressure in the injector pipes once the engine has been stopped for a bit, but you can hold a rag over them as you loosen the injector end of the pipes.I dont usually plug them as not much comes out, but it will take a bit to start up, so make sure your battery is good or you can jump it off another car!

I took my EGR valve out today but did not realise it came apart? I cleaned out the rather large hole in the main cylinder body, but is there more to dismantle, someone mentioned putting copper slip onto some contacts so am i right in guessing that the plastic 'bit' comes apart too?
Sorry for rambling but never done this before

Just cleaned my egr valve today on my 9.3 03 2.2tid as i was getting the engine management light coming on and a drop in power when the turbo was just about to kick in.....hope this cures it.
When i took the plastic cover off it was surprisingly clean....not like the rest of it (was choked with carbon).
Dunno if its just me but the turbo seems a bit hesitant sometimes....i haven't had the car long and after 13 days the turbo went and had to send it off to get reconditioned (new bearing), then this happened a day and a half after getting the turbo fitted?
To be honest i cant tell if theres any difference after cleaning the egr valve as the car ran smooth anyway....was just losing boost from the turbo and engine light coming on?
Fingers crossed it has sorted this problem.

Hi all,
First time post! - Bought a 9-3 Tid yesterday for what was a bit of a bargain
price. Lol I got 10 miles back up the A38 and eml came on and limp home mode
kicked in  Was totally gutted that after years of buying cheapies off fleabay
I had finally been caught with a stinker!
Needless to say anyone the knows the A38 north from Plymouth will know there
are several very long uphill stretches with Haldon hill being the worst. I crested
said hill with a queue of big trucks behind me at 15 MPH!
Spent last night moping around the house afraid to tell the missus cos she'd
already had ago about me buying another car anyway(think I've got ADHD when it
comes to cars).
So imagine my relief when I've found this lovely super smashing site and the information
contained within it!
Will be trying this threads remedy first - will let you know how I got on!

It's ok, bought a duffer as well from
Autopoint
175 Main Street,
Garelochhead,
G84 0AU

Car lasted 13 days then turbo went....took them a month to get me a recon turbo sorted then after 12 days it went again, Garage doesn't want to know, they took my £4,000 and then basically said it's not our problem anymore. it's sat on my drive for nearly 2 month. Also in between the turbo problem the egr valve went aswell.

Real bummer that one! - Here's me thinking £1200 spent was bad enough!
Hopefully a can of carb cleaner and an hour or two spent getting me hands
dirty will cure my problems.
Feel real sorry for you bud, knowing how I feel you must feel 3 and a half
times worse! :wall:

Yeah i'm really peed off....turbo guys just been on the phone saying the turbo seems ok....it was making a high pitched whining noise?
Yes i used carb cleaner and it sorted it no probs....when i took the plastic cover off there wasn't any carbon on the link tho?

a big THANK YOU to everyone regarding cleaning egr valve, i have had problems the last few weeks ,i also had my car checked out on tech 2 fault finding computer, it found 5 different fault codes none where for the egr valve but 1 code was the m.a.p. sensor ,after reading all the comments on this problem i then went back to my mechanic but he did not seem to think this would cure the problem as computer did not say anything about my e.g.r :wall: anyway i read all these comments again i then phoned Two Stroke to Turbo to price a m.a.p. sensor , instead of selling me one this guy spoke to me about this subject as well as cleaning the egr & map sensor he also mentioned the alloy housing also ! i could not believe how helpfull this guy was ,anyway i have done it ,unbelievable how much muck was attached to all 3 , been out & about running for about 4 hours so far so good ! fingers crossed

After reading this thread about 2 months ago, I followed the advice and cleaned out the EGR on my 2001 9-3 Tid. Thanks to all, the instructions very clear. Last week however the engine light decided to appear again. The car is fine on start-up, but after 2 or 3 mins driving the engine light comes on. For the next 5/10 mins the engine light can't make up it's mind whether to be on or off. It's not flashing, but will come on for a bit, and then go off again. If I turn the car off after about 10 mins and then restart it it's as fresh as a daisy. Did I balls-up when cleaning the egr, or is it likely to be something else and if so what, what?!?!

Cheers

hello everyone, my names mo and im new into the saab scene and its a pleasure being a saab owner

however recently I have been having a few problems with the car, let me introduce the beast... saab 93 2.2 TID 2003, I believe the most common fault is the egr valve needing cleaning. I have seen some post here which shows how to remove and clean which I have done. I done this yesterday (05/07/10) and the car was fine, got upto 70 and no managment light.

however today was a different story, as soon as i do 40-50 the car starts to shake and jerk, the managment light came on again too, what can this be?

can anyone plz help

OK i have now changed the EGR with a new one... but still problems, one major problem i do get is that when driving along, 30mph foots on the accelerator but no power and a ticking noice coming from the engine, at times the car jus turns it self off where i have to pull over and start the car again... now what the f**k can be the problem :(

Well it wasn't my EGR valve after all, it was a split in my intercooler rad, which also knackered my turbo. i have fixed the rad (one of the spines that hold the fins on had burst so i cut it out and sealed both ends) but now need a new turbo at a cost of £504 from neo brothers or £710 from the stealers.
I was getting the same error codes as you would with a faulty EGR valve and the same symptoms ie engine light loss off power etc.
Get a garage to check your intercooler guys as it can work out quite expensive.

Saab mechanic says he's had a few burst intercoolers.
